Secondary school
Arboretum College will prepare its students for the Belgian jurys (State examinations), which each student will do in his or her native language. In the future, we envisage preparing our students for other international examinations. A foundation year, or the university preparation year, will be organised to complement the third cycle of the humanities programme.
We have decided to follow the Flemish Community’s highly regarded eindtermen (syllabus) as a framework to prepare students for the different jurys, and for Belgian or foreign university entrance examinations.
Under Belgian law, private education is treated like home schooling and is regulated by the Communauté française or the Vlaamse gemeenschap, depending on the child’s domicile. The Communauté française requires jury examinations at 14 and 16 years for home or private schooled students, while the Vlaamse Gemeenschap does not. When transferring from home or private school to a state-subsidised school in either system, the student will be enrolled as an ‘élève libre’, a free student, until he or she sits the jury at the end of cycle 1 or 2, following which they are treated as a normal student with the usual access to graduation via their school.
As soon as possible, we will seek recognition for our education programme by undertaking various registration processes with local and international education authorities in order to integrate our students at both secondary and tertiary levels, thereby eliminating or reducing the need for supplementary examinations.
